The China Automotive Technology and Research Center (referred to as China National Automobile Center ) serves as the technical support institution for the industrial technology regulatory agencies and the competent authorities of the national government. During the “12th Five-Year Plan” period, it will continue to improve the testing capabilities of auto vehicles and parts and components .

In order to meet the needs of China's auto transmission research and development and testing, in February 2012, the Automobile Engineering Research Institute of SAIC Central signed an equipment purchase contract with Austrian AVL Company and introduced the AVL complete set of equipment to build a five-motor powertrain laboratory. The completion of infrastructure in the second half of 2012 will be completed and put into operation in the first half of 2013. By then, it will become the first light-duty drive transmission and powertrain laboratory in China. The SAIC Automotive Powertrain Laboratory is equipped with a 370kW drive motor and four 220kW load motors. The test targets are passenger cars and light commercial vehicle transmissions or powertrains. Test capabilities cover two-wheel drive/four-wheel drive transmission performance/durability. Test, two-wheel drive/four-drive force assembly performance/durability test, transmission/powertrain real-vehicle road simulation, powertrain fuel consumption/emission test, etc. The SAIC Automotive Powertrain Laboratory will combine relevant departments’ automotive product testing capabilities to provide a complete solution for the matching of automotive automatic transmissions and power trains.
